MTH-075 Announcement

We're not actually supposed to have class on Tuesday, December 13. Then again, it's not forbidden, either, and apparently our room will be available. So we will have class as usual and continue to review for the final. Do the practice final and see what problems you have questions about.

MTH-095 Practice Final

Here is the practice final. Most of these don't have multiple choice answers as on the actual final. This is just freshly typed--there may be typographical errors.

Each problem represents the sort of problem that appears on the actual final. If you can handle this test, you don't need to worry about the final.

MTH-075 Practice Final

Check back tomorrow morning--the practice final is all written but I have to type it up, which will have to wait till morning.

Here is the practice final. I have not gone over it since typing it, so as it says in supermarket circulars, "Not responsible for typographical errors."

Oh, yeah, there are typos alright. Problems 7, 18, and 24 have issues. Problem 7, answer C should be minus instead of plus. Problem 18, answer D should have a 2x where it has an x. Problem 24 has an solution that turns out to cause division by zero in the original equation.

MTH-095 Test Announcement! (And Practice Test 5, too)

Test 5 will be on Tuesday, December 6, in class--not in the Test Center. Don't miss class that day!

Tomorrow (12/1) will be a review for that test--check back here for the practice test, which will be done soon. Done.

The test on Tuesday will be only 16 questions at most. Open answers--no multiple choice, but you get partial credit for work that is partially correct.

Here's the practice test:

Answers to MTH-075 Practice Test #4

Here are the answers. Note that problems 11 and 16 have something wrong with them. Changes to make the problems solvable are suggested along with what those answers would be.

1. 9x3y7(4x5y2 – 6x3 + 5y)

2. (xy)(y + 4)

3. 4(x – 5)(x + 1)

4. (x + 7)(x – 9)

5. –x6(x3 + 9)

6. (3x2 – 4y2)(5x + 6y)

7. (x + 12)(x – 8)

8. (5x + 2)(7x + 3)

9. (3x + 2y)(2x – 3y)

10. 5(2x – 1)(x + 6)

11. This one seems to be prime.
       It should probably read 21x2 – 5x – 6.
        Then the answer would be (7x + 3)(3x – 2).

12. 2(7x2 + 5y)(7x2 – 5y)

13. (x – 7y)2

14. (5x + 9)2

15. (x2 + 4)(x + 2)(x – 2)

16. As written, this problem can’t be solved by factoring.
       The problem should probably read 20x2 + 31x + 18 = 6.
Then the answer would be {–4/5, – ¾}.
17. {–5, –1/3, ¾}

18. {1/3, – 1/3}

19. {–8/21, –1)

20. {2, 5}

MTH-095 Practice Test #4 Answers

Here are the answers to the practice test. This version is in html, which has only limited support for math symbols. It's impossible to stack fractions, so instead of horizontal division bars, there are slashes. To avoid ambiguity I've added extra parentheses. Answer number 11 has a decimal where a mixed fraction would be more traditional.

1.  4x(4√2x)
2.  –3a3b8
3.  x / 2
4.  3
5.  3(4x3)
6.  3√(x + 2)2
7.  1/9
8.  x11/12
9.  y5/2 / x1/4
10. 13
11. (2, 4.5)
12. –√6
13. (x2 – 2)( 3√(2x))
14. 4x3(√3)
15. 3√xx√3
16. 3 - 3√3
17. 4(√21) / 7
18. 9(3√2) / 2
19. –5(4 + √7) / 3
20. (3x – 6√(xy)) / (x – 4y)
21. x = 3
22. x = 6
23. 9i
24. 14 + 5i
25. –(6/13) + (9/13)i

Math Tutors Available!

Sharon Rogers, Associate Dean for Educational Services, informs me that there are tutors for students in developmental math (incl. MTH 075 and MTH 095) at BCC who apparently don't have enough students to keep them busy.

If you are worried about your grade, or if it bothers you that there's some homework problems you just can't do, then let me know and I'll pass your email address along, and she will see to it you get connected with a tutor.
