MTH-130 Precalc: Remaining HW Assignments

Here are the rest of the homework assignments for the semester.

By 11/16 you should have completed the following:

4.5 Vocab Check and #5-25 odd, 31-59 odd
4.6 Vocab Check and #9-37 odd, 49, 51

Due to the Thanksgiving holiday, you've got two weeks to complete the remaining assignments, which should be done by 11/30. These are as follows.

4.7 Vocab Check and #5-19 odd, 43-47 odd, 55-65 odd, 69
4.8 Vocab Check and #5, 9, 15, 19, 21, 27
5.1 Vocab Check and #11-15 odd, 23, 25-51 odd, 71, 75, 81
5.2 Vocab Check and #9, 11, 13

We will discuss these four sections in class on Friday 11/16. Then get right to work on it, since you'd rather know sooner than later that you need help.

There is an additional assignment in the syllabus, which I don't require but you might as well do: Review, pp. 364-6, #43, 57, 65, 85-91 all, 95-101 all, 103, 111-114 all, 123-127 all, 140.

So you can keep it for studying, this fourth batch of homework is due the day of the final exam, 12/14. It will be worth five points like the other assignments, and I'll give you 6 points for completely working out all the assigned problems in 4.5 through 5.2 plus the review exercises. As usual, you can also get extra points for neatness, so be neat. You're not just helping the person who has to read it; you're helping yourself, too!

We will review for Test 4 on 11/30, so there will be a practice test posted on this blog at least a couple days before that. You should print out the practice test and make yourself do it as if it were the real test, in order to find out where you need more practice. Then bring your copy of the practice test to class on 11/30.

There will be an announcement soon regarding Test 4, in class on Friday and here on this blog.

Math 130 Practice Test 3

Here is practice test 3. Print it out, and try to work the problems as if it were the real test (no book, no notes, no calculator). This will tell you where you need more practice. Then bring it to class on Friday.
The answers follow after the break.

HW for Diff Eq's Assigned 10/15/12

We moved on to differential operators (Section 4.5) and the annihilator method of undetermined coefficients (Section 4.6). The homework for these sections is as follows:

Section 4.5: #1, 5, 9, 11, 21-31 odd, 35, 37, 39
Section 4.6 #1-21 odd, 33, 35, 37

We didn't spend much class time on it, but in Chapter 5 covers applications of 2nd order linear DE's as solved by the methods of Chapter 4. So far, the assignment is as follows:

Section 5.1: #1, 15-18 all
Section 5.2 #1, 15-17 all

MTH-130 Precalculus Homework for 9/7/12

Here is the homework you should do by this Friday. It's a lot, but it breaks down as follows. Sections 1.1 through 1.3 are review and we covered them in class, so they shouldn't present much trouble for you. Just do it; it's good practice and should be a confidence builder for you. Section 1.4 we also covered in class; I expect you to get through all those exercises as well. Sections 1.5 through 1.7 we did not cover in class at all; these would normally be assigned for Week Two. Attempt these problems anyway. If you can do all these problems, great! If not, it should get you started asking questions (even if they start with "What the...!"). As long as it isn't something dangerous like scuba diving, it's good to attempt it on your own before your instructor explains how to do it. That way you are motivated to overcome frustration and you come to class with some expectation of what he'll be talking about. (You don't have to wait till Friday either--you can email me as soon as you run into trouble.)

Here is the homework assignment:

Section 1.1: Vocab check and exercises #27, 41, 47, pages 8-12.
Section 1.2: Vocab check and exercises #7, 19, 25, 33, 35, 49, 68, 71, pages 21-23.
Section 1.3: Vocab check and exercises #17, 19, 31, 45, 83, 87, pages 33-38.
Section 1.4: Vocab check and exercises #7, 9, 15, 19-23 odd, 37-49 odd, 53, 59-65 odd, 71-81 odd, 103-107 odd, pages 48-53.
Section 1.5: Vocab check and exercises #9-13 odd, 17-31 odd, 39-45 odd, 83, pages 61-65.
Section 1.6: Vocab check and exercises #11, 21-27 odd, 43, 45, 57, 59, pages 71-72.
Section 1.7: Vocab check and exercises #7, 15-61 odd, pages 78-82.

MTH-130 Precalculus First-Day Handout

MTH-130-500 Precalculus                            Instructor: Edward Bailey (ebailey@bcc.edu)
Friday 05:00PM - 08:45PM, Laurel Hall 207                                             http://mathematikoi.blogspot.com

Course materials: The syllabus and textbook (Precalculus: A Concise Course by R. Larson) are available at the bookstore.
Attendance: You are expected to attend all class meetings. Showing up late or leaving early does not count as attendance. If you miss a class, you are responsible for obtaining missed class notes and assignments. Whenever possible, please let me know ahead of time if you are going to miss a class so I can let you know what work you will need to make up.
Conduct: Students are here to learn. Any conduct that your fellow students would reasonably find distracting will be cause to remove you from the classroom. Examples of such misconduct include side conversations, texting, and sleeping. As your instructor, I am focused on the students who are actively engaged in learning. If other students are engaging in conduct that you find distracting, do not hesitate to bring it to my attention and I will deal with it promptly.
Homework: All homework for each unit must be submitted on the day of the unit test. It must be stapled together. Loose pages will not be accepted. Put your name, the section numbers, and problem numbers on the homework, so I can tell what and whose it is. It will be graded for neatness and completeness.
Calculators: The course catalog calls for a graphing calculator, such as a TI-83. However, any ordinary scientific calculator is sufficient for this course. What students need from this course is understanding of the material and ability to apply it, without which the calculator is useless. You should also not expect a calculator to do anything you can’t do, given time. Therefore, to the extent possible, calculator use will be prohibited on tests and quizzes.
Unit Tests: Unit Tests will be given as announced, with a week’s notice.
THERE ARE NO RETESTS
Final Exam: A comprehensive final exam will be given during finals week.
Office Hours: I do not have an office. However, I can arrange to meet with students on before class. Email me and I’ll try to get back to you promptly. Email is the way for you to contact me outside of class. Use your BCC email account so your email is not mistaken for spam. Also, check my blog for announcements (see above).
Grading Policy
Homework: 10%
Quizzes: 10%
FOUR UNIT TESTS: 16% each
Final Exam 16%
Final grade as a function of overall average x.
x ≥ 90% = A
85% ≤  x < 90% = B+
80% ≤  x < 85% = B
75% ≤  x < 79% = C+
70% ≤  x < 75% = C
60% ≤  x < 70% = D
x < 60% = F
At the instructor’s discretion, a “fudge factor” may be applied to a student’s grade. It will take the form of points added to the final percentage grade. Under no circumstances will points be taken away. The reasons for adding points to a student’s grade include attendance, class participation, coming to class prepared, and other indications of effort and positive attitude.
"X" Contracts and Incompletes: There will be no “X” contracts or incompletes. The last day to drop (with a 50% refund) is September 12. The last day to withdraw is October 26.

MTH-075 Practice Final (and Final Exam announcement)

Here's the practice final. We'll use it to review on Monday, July 9. The final will be Wednesday, July 11.

BTW, if you intend to take a retest and need a permission slip from me, then email me.

If you have trouble accessing this practice final, email me at ebailey@bcc.edu and I will email you a copy.

Be advised that there are typos in this practice final, so there are no correct answers to problems 7, 18, and 32. Also, problem 24 you get a solution that won't work because of division by zero.

Diff Eq's: Solutions to Problems in Section 4.4

Here are solutions to problems #1-17 odd in Section 4.4 where we solve non-homogeneous linear DEs with constant coefficients, where the forcing functions are sums and products of polynomials, exponentials, and sine and cosine. The last few involve a great deal of bookkeeping to determine the coefficients.

Note that in #15, the forcing function has the same frequency as the natural frequency gotten from solving for the complementary solution. Therefore, you might have guessed the particular solution to be of the form x(A cos ωx + B sin ωx), but if you tried it, you found it didn't work. It would have worked if the forcing function weren't already multiplied by x. Since it is, we must instead propose a particular function with both sine and cosine multiplied by 2nd order polynomials with undetermined coefficients. (Actually, you could always err on the side of caution and propose higher order polynomial multiples. That would be a lot of useless busy-work, though, in cases where we can be sure of the order of the polynomial in the solution.)

This first course in Differential Equations is equivalent to those offered at 4-year institutions. In the expectation that most, if not all, students enrolled in this course will be pursuing degrees in engineering, the topics covered will be geared toward engineering applications. This course should be readily transferrable to such institutions. Should any difficulty arise in securing transfer credit, the student should contact both the instructor and the BCC transfer coordinator.

    Prerequisite: MTH-220 Calculus III
Text: Zill, D. A First Course in Differential Equations, The Classic Fifth Edition. Brooks/Cole, 2001.
    Grading: There will be three exams given, one corresponding to each unit. Where x is the average of your test grades, x ≥ 90% earns an A, x ≥ 80% earns a B, x ≥ 70% earns a C, and x ≥ 60% earns a D. Averages of at least 85% or 75% earn a B+ or C+, respectively.
Homework: It will be assigned at each class meeting and posted on the blog (see above). It will not be collected or graded. Bring it to class and be prepared to discuss it. Since you made it through Calculus III, you should be well aware that diligence in doing homework assignments is the key to success.
Calculators: Use of calculators on tests is neither necessary nor permitted.
Office Hours: I do not have an office. However, I can meet with students on campus on Mondays and Wednesdays after class. Email me and I’ll try to get back to you promptly. Email is the way for you to contact me outside of class. Use your BCC email account so your email is not mistaken for spam. Check my blog for announcements (see above).

MTH-095 Practice Final (and Final Exam announcement)

Here is the practice final. If you are able to do the problems on your own, you will be well prepared for the final. BTW, the final exam will be Wednesday, May 9. We will meet at our usual time and place.

We will also have an additional review session on Monday, May 7. This is during finals week but our room should be available at our usual class time. Obviously you are not required to attend, but it may be helpful to you.

If you have trouble accessing this practice final, email me at ebailey@bcc.edu and I will email you a copy.

MTH-075 Practice Final (and Final Exam announcement)

Here is the practice final. Make sure you can work as many the problems as you can on your own before the final. BTW, the final exam is at our usual meeting time and classroom on Wednesday, May 9.

We will also have an additional review session on Monday, May 7. This is during finals week but our room should be available at our usual class time. Obviously you are not required to attend, but it may be helpful to you.

If you have trouble accessing this practice final, email me at ebailey@bcc.edu and I will email you a copy.

Be advised that there are typos in this practice final, so there are no correct answers to problems 7, 18, and 32. Also, problem 24 you get a solution that won't work because of division by zero.

MTH-095 Practice Test #4, Multiple Choice Version

    Here it is:

    MTH 095 Practice Test 4 Spring 2012 -

MTH-095 Practice Test #4 Answers, etc.

Here are the answers to the practice test. Meanwhile, I am making up a multiple-choice version and it will be finished by 3PM today, so check back for that.

In the process of making up multiple choice answers, I've gone through the answers to the practice test and found a lot of errors, which I have been fixing. Here are the correct answers:

MTH-095 Practice Test #4 and Test Announcement

The test will be on Wednesday, April 18. We will review for it on Monday, April 16. Here is the practice test. This is not the multiple choice version. Hopefully I will post a multiple choice version soon, but not until after proofreading the actual test and sending it off to the print shop. Before Monday, try to do all the problems on the practice test so you know what problems you have trouble with. Then you'll REALLY pay attention to the review.

MTH-075 Practice Test #4 and Test Announcement

We will review for test 4 on Monday, April 16. I will also give out the test. Do not miss class for any reason, but if an emergency comes up contact me as soon as possible to make other arrangements!

Here is the practice test.To get the most out of it, sit down and work all the problems on this test between now and Monday. That way you'll know which problems are the most trouble for you, and you'll REALLY be paying attention to the review! Remember, the actual test is just like the practice test, so you want to be an expert on doing the practice test.

As usual, if you have trouble downloading this, email me at ebailey@bcc.edu and I'll send it to you.

The answers follow after the page break. (I advise you not to peek till you try the practice test on your own.)

MTH-075 Homework for Monday, March 26 (and beyond)

I put off collecting homework for Sections 5.4, 5.5, and 5.6 on Wednesday. This is now due Monday, March 26. The assignments for these sections are given in the syllabus, as always.

We covered 5.7 and (admittedly in haste) 5.8. This homework should be done by Wednesday, March 28 (the day of the test review). Don't forget there's a test coming up!

For extra credit, you may submit the Review Assignment for Chapter 5, which is also in the syllabus. (The sample test it refers to is the one in the back of the syllabus.) This may be turned in the day of the test.

If you are unable to attend class, you should email me and ask what you're missing. You can also scan your homework and send it as a compressed image file--that counts as turning in homework. And remember, I don't give a hoot if you get the right answers on the HW: just show your work. Do your thinking on paper!

    MTH-095 Practice Test #3

Here's the practice test without multiple choice answers. It does, however, have the correct answers at the end. I'll add in multiple choice and post the updated practice test tomorrow. Just remember: if you know the correct answers when you see the multiple choice version, it won't be like the real test, so my advice is don't look at the correct answers yet.
